Churches and Mosques in Kazan'

Out of Kazan's more than 30 churches and mosques, we have chosen twelve for closer examination: five churches, one monastery, and six mosques. We have scrutinized their history in detail; they figure as one major strand of our project. Mosques and churches that were open for at least a certain period of time during the Soviet era, or came to be used for purposes involving public attention, are of special interest to our project. The Peter and Paul's Cathedral, for example, accommodated a planetarium for a number of years. Furthermore, we are interested in buildings that were re-opened during the perestroika years or after the end of the Soviet Union, and are now being used for their original, religious purpose. But we also include buildings that were destroyed during the Soviet years, such as the Kazakovskaia Mosque that was taken down during the construction of the Tatastan Prospect.
