History Workshop Europe (Program of the "Remembrance and Future" Fund and the Robert Bosch Foundation)

Geschichtswerkstatt Europa

This program provides funding for international student groups who look into the misuse of history for ideological and nationalistic ends and put local, regional and national history into a European perspective. It addresses university students and young researchers aged 18 to 35 years. Eligible for funding are international groups, whose members come from at least two countries, one of them being Germany, the other a country in Eastern, Central or South Eastern Europe. Trinational projects with Israeli or Palestinian partners are also financed. The history workshop Europe was first initiated in November 2004; since then, 32 projects have been supported. These projects fall into three categories: regional memory, text books, or museums and exhibitions.

The "Remembrance and Future" Fund (Fonds "Erinnerung und Zukunft") is also known as the "Future fund" of the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" (Zukunftsfonds der Stiftung "Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft"). The foundation was created by the German government and German companies in 2000 to organize compensation payments to victims of National Socialism, mainly to persons who suffered from forced labor. Since the payments were concluded in April 2002, the "Remembrance and Future Fund" has been working as a research foundation.
Its objective is to provide funding for projects that are supporting survivors of the National Socialist regime or fostering international understanding and youth exchange, social justice, keeping alive the memory of the threat of totalitarian systems and tyranny, and promoting international cooperation in humanitarian issues. The fund also supports international education projects and scholarship programs. 358 million Euro of the foundation's total capital are reserved for the "Remembrance and Future Fund"; 7 million Euro are spent annually on various international projects.
